Changes in Retail Sales Taxes in BC and PEI

Effective today, residents of Prince Edward Island will be subject to a Harmonized Sales Tax of 14% on most services and products whilst British Columbia Residents will be subject to a Goods and Services Tax of 5%, which will be replacing the Harmonized Sales Tax of 12% in BC.

In British Columbia there will be a decrease in taxes on books (audio, electronic, bound and printed), basic cable services, concert tickets, music lessons and movie tickets but a combined tax of 12% (5% GST + 7% PST) will remain on most products and services. Individually purchased magazines will be subject to less taxes in this province.

In Prince Edward Island there will be decreases in retail sales taxes on CDs, DVDs, Blu-Rays, MP3 players, DVD and Blu-Ray players, radios, stereos, televisions, movie tickets, basic cable subscriptions and individual magazine purchases. Audio Books and Books will still be subject to the GST at 5% in this province whilst music lessons will be exempt.

Boxing Day Sales Start Tonight

You’ll notice that most retailers are starting their boxing day sales as early as 8pm tonight, like Best Buy, Future Shop and The Source. But some have already started offering Boxing Week specials like iTunesicon and Amazon.ca, where you can find deep discounts on music and film.

I just took advantage of this sale to upgrade my X-Men collection to blu-ray by placing an order for the X-Men Trilogy and X-Men: First Class. It was way too tempting.

Also tempting are those $50 iTunesicon gift cards that are being offered for $39 at Best Buy Canada and Future Shop stores, as part of their boxing day sales, though I’m still weighing my options when it comes to a streaming player for my television.

BTW, if you’re looking for gift cards, my guide is online and will be expanded shortly.

A Vinyl Comeback ?

It appears that more and more consumers are choosing vinyl over compact disc when if comes to purchasing physical copies of their music.

According to Soundscan, Americans had purchased just over 330 million vinyl albums last year and over 76 thousand new record albums were released in the United States that year.

Apparently many audiophiles are purchasing mp3s for their portable players and purchasing vinyl for their home stereos instead of compact discs because they believe vinyl has a richer sound. And although many bloggers have claimed that this opinion was subjective, the sales of vinyl records continue to rise.

Regardless of the technological debate, consumers have not dropped vinyl as a physical format like the magnetic tape formats (8 track/cassette tape). And compact disc sales are dropping so dramatically in the United States that many major retailers have either reduced or eliminated the retail space they had dedicated to the format.

On the other hand, many online retailers have created vinyl stores to fulfill the demand, including Amazon.ca & chapters.indigo.ca in Canada, and Amazon.com, Barnes & Nobleicon, CD Universeicon, DeepDiscounts.com & JR.comicon in the United States.

Yes, compact disc sales were still substantial at $225.5 Million dollars in the United States in 2011. But sales have slipped by 5.7% from 2010 whilst sales of LPs, digital singles and digital albums have grown.

LPs will not likely not surpass compact discs in sales anytime soon. But it obviously remains a niche product that is fashionable in certain circles, who also prefer the artwork found on LPs and 45s.

Compact disc inserts may be adequate to some but I personally prefer framing a LP for display if I am unable to find a poster of an album cover’s artwork. And I doubt that I am alone in finding the LP album cover more aesthetically appealing.

Many home audio systems and compact stereo units still include turntables but record players are available as separate components in Canada from Amazon.ca, Sears.ca, and Sony.ca.

Boxing Week Starts

Amazon.ca and iTunes icon have decided to start their Boxing Week sales early.

At Amazon.ca they’ve slashed prices on DVDs & Blu-rays, Books and Software, and iTunesicon are not only are they offering music downloads at 69 centsicon but offering HD film downloadsicon for as low as $4.99.

Boxing Week sales at Sears.ca and Tigerdirect.caicon have also begun, so I wont be waiting in line tomorrow morning.
