{"id":1897,"date":"2012-02-10T20:02:53","date_gmt":"2012-02-11T01:02:53","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.musicbymailcanada.com\/blog\/?p=1897"},"modified":"2012-02-10T20:02:53","modified_gmt":"2012-02-11T01:02:53","slug":"latvia-says-no-to-acta-bill-c-11-update","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.musicbymailcanada.com\/blog\/?p=1897","title":{"rendered":"Latvia Says No To ACTA \/ Bill C-11 Update"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Latvia<\/strong> is the latest European nation to stop their ratification of the <strong>Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement<\/strong>. And it appears that <strong>Germany<\/strong> wants to hold off on signing in response to the public protests in their country.<\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately <strong>Bill C-11<\/strong> has progressed through the first and second reading in the <strong>House Of Commons<\/strong> here in <strong>Canada<\/strong>, with little to no response to the overwhelming opposition to the <strong>digital locks provisions<\/strong> and <strong>SOPA<\/strong> like website blocking.<\/p>\n<p>The public has spoken, both in the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ic.gc.ca\/eic\/site\/008.nsf\/eng\/h_00001.html\" target=\"_blank\">public consultations<\/a> on <strong>Bill C-32<\/strong> and with recent letters and <a href=\"http:\/\/openmedia.ca\/lockdown\" target=\"_blank\">petitions<\/a> against <strong>Bill C-11<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>It is clear that Canadians do not want contradictory policies on <strong>private copying<\/strong> and <strong>SOPA<\/strong> like enforcement of our <strong>Copyright Act<\/strong>. Over <strong>32,000<\/strong> Canadians have signed the <a href=\"http:\/\/openmedia.ca\/lockdown\" target=\"_blank\">Openmedia.ca petition<\/a>, including yours truly. And <strong>74,000<\/strong> &#8220;liked&#8221; the petition on <strong>Facebook<\/strong>. <\/p>\n<p>It is a matter of record. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.parl.gc.ca\/Parlinfo\/Compilations\/HouseOfCommons\/MemberByPostalCode.aspx?Menu=HOC\" target=\"_blank\">Members of Parliament<\/a> have received letters and emails conveying concern about or opposition to several provisions in <strong>Bill C-11<\/strong>, yet the current government has failed to address this correspondence.<\/p>\n<p>This bill was rushed through it&#8217;s second reading in the <strong>House of Commons<\/strong> today, with little time for debate, and is up for review by a committee, who will analyze and amend the bill.<\/p>\n<p>Hopefully they will notice how contradictory the <strong>technological protections measures<\/strong> are and amend them accordingly.  <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Latvia is the latest European nation to stop their ratification of the Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement.
