{"id":1972,"date":"2012-03-12T15:15:55","date_gmt":"2012-03-12T19:15:55","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.musicbymailcanada.com\/blog\/?p=1972"},"modified":"2012-03-12T15:15:55","modified_gmt":"2012-03-12T19:15:55","slug":"bill-c-11-under-review-today","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.musicbymailcanada.com\/blog\/?p=1972","title":{"rendered":"Bill C-11 Under Review Today"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Bill C-11<\/strong>, a.k.a the <strong>Copyright Modernization Act<\/strong>, is now being reviewed in committee. <\/p>\n<p>This committee will review the proposed amendments, clause by clause, and will make adjustments in response to requests by interested parties.<\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately numerous groups have requested major amendments that could complicate matters for consumers and Canadian internet users.<\/p>\n<p>Members of the music industry are not only asking for a levy on <strong>mp3 players<\/strong> and serious restrictions to the fair dealing\/user generated content clauses. But they are also asking for <strong>SOPA<\/strong> and <strong>PIPA<\/strong> like measures that include the blocking of foreign web sites and the removal of online content without court oversight.<\/p>\n<p>Other industry groups have also called for the identification of internet users, again without legal oversight, and the introduction of <strong>RIAA<\/strong> style prosecutions to Canada with amendments that are so vague as to possibly result in the prosecution of social networking sites like <strong>Facebook<\/strong> and search engines like <strong>Google<\/strong>. <\/p>\n<p>The <strong>Supreme Court of Canada<\/strong> has had previous rulings on fair dealing, the prosecution of internet providers in regards to copyright and the proposed levies on mp3 players. But it appears some members of the music industry don&#8217;t care about these rulings.<\/p>\n<p>They also don&#8217;t care about the many concerns voiced by the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ic.gc.ca\/eic\/site\/008.nsf\/eng\/h_00001.html\" target=\"_blank\">public<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.musicbymailcanada.com\/blog\/?p=1567\" target=\"_blank\">associations<\/a> representing students and librarians, as made apparent by their <a href=\"http:\/\/blip.tv\/michaelgeist\/james-moore-s-radical-extremists-speech-annotated-edition-3880969\" target=\"_blank\">rhetoric<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>They&#8217;ve even gone as far as to <a href=\"http:\/\/financialpostbusiness.files.wordpress.com\/2012\/03\/complaint-21feb2012.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">attempt to pressure<\/a> the <strong>Canadian Bar Association<\/strong> to retract <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cba.org\/cba\/submissions\/pdf\/11-06-eng.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">their official opposition<\/a> to the questionable provisions in the <strong>Copyright Modernization Act<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>In essence they&#8217;re willing to allow the public to be subjected to vague and possibly unconstitutional regulations, that will be questioned in law for years, when exemptions for <strong>fair dealing<\/strong> and <strong>private copying<\/strong> would in no way hinder their industry.<\/p>\n<p>Under the premise of the protection of their industry, they will subject consumers to more <strong>copy protection<\/strong> schemes like that of the <strong>Sony Rootkit<\/strong>, that have failed and endangered their interests in the past.<\/p>\n<p>There are currently two petitions that may be of interest to those who oppose these amendments :<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/internetlockdown.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\">The Open Media Internet Lockdown Petition<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/petition.liberal.ca\/user-rights-trump-digital-locks\/\" target=\"_blank\">The Liberal Party Digital Lock Petition<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Please sign these petitions as soon as possible and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.parl.gc.ca\/Parlinfo\/Compilations\/HouseOfCommons\/MemberByPostalCode.aspx?Menu=HOC\" target=\"_blank\">contact your local MP<\/a> in regards to your concerns. <\/p>\n<p><strong>Thank You<\/strong>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Bill C-11, a.k.a the Copyright Modernization Act, is now being reviewed in committee.
