{"id":1975,"date":"2012-03-14T18:00:02","date_gmt":"2012-03-14T22:00:02","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.musicbymailcanada.com\/blog\/?p=1975"},"modified":"2012-03-14T18:00:02","modified_gmt":"2012-03-14T22:00:02","slug":"few-changes-to-bill-c-11","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.musicbymailcanada.com\/blog\/?p=1975","title":{"rendered":"Few Changes To Bill C-11"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Bill C-11<\/strong> appears to have passed through the committee review almost as is.<\/p>\n<p>The amendments proposed by the entertainment industry in regards to a levy on <strong>mp3 players<\/strong> and additional limitations on <strong>fair dealing<\/strong> and <strong>user generated content<\/strong> have been rejected.<\/p>\n<p>Also rejected were the calls for the identification of internet users and the introduction of <strong>RIAA<\/strong> style prosecutions to <strong>Canada<\/strong> that could have resulted in the prosecution of social networking sites like Facebook and search engines like Google<\/p>\n<p>The prosecution of sites and services that &#8220;provide a service primarily for the purpose of enabling acts of copyright infringement&#8221; may still be a possibility. But this is expected to go through further processes. And whether <strong>website blocking<\/strong> will be part of these processes is unknown.<\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately, the <strong>technological protection measure<\/strong> provisions remain intact.<\/p>\n<p>This means <strong>private copying<\/strong> will remain limited to material that has not been <strong>copy protected<\/strong> and individuals will not be able to obtain equipment or software that enables them to view films from other regions.<\/p>\n<p>Canadians are able to view <strong>Region 0 DVDs<\/strong>, <strong>Region 1 DVDs<\/strong> and <strong>Region A Blu-Ray discs<\/strong> on their store bought equipment. But unfortunately some films are not released in those region codes.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Blu-Ray<\/strong> regional coding may have resulted in better access to Asian films. But many European films appear to stay off <strong>Canadian<\/strong> shelves because of their lack of popularity in the states. <\/p>\n<p><strong>Academy Award<\/strong> nominated films and film festival winners do get through but the lesser known titles and some older films, concerts and music video compilations are generally placed in limbo in North America.<\/p>\n<p>Hopefully these films will make their way onto online services like <a target='new' href=\"http:\/\/click.linksynergy.com\/fs-bin\/click?id=k57x2rZ0UQI&#038;offerid=146261.10000007&#038;type=3&#038;subid=0\" >iTunes<\/a><IMG border=0 width=1 height=1 src=\"http:\/\/ad.linksynergy.com\/fs-bin\/show?id=k57x2rZ0UQI&#038;bids=146261.10000007&#038;type=3&#038;subid=0\" > and <a href=\"http:\/\/gan.doubleclick.net\/gan_click?lid=41000000032826727&#038;pubid=21000000000269434\" target=\"_blank\">Netflix<\/a> in the future. But I think it is rather ridiculous to demand <strong>Canadian consumers<\/strong> purchase <strong>DVDs<\/strong> and <strong>Blu-ray discs<\/strong> from North American distributors that either refuse to carry films or delay their release for years.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Blu-ray discs<\/strong> and <strong>DVDs<\/strong> released in North America have always been my first choice. Importing from Europe is expensive because of the shipping and handling so I&#8217;d rather purchase them locally. But how can I purchase something that is not available here ?<\/p>\n<p>Where are many of the <strong>Louis De Funes<\/strong> films ? Where are the <strong>Region 0<\/strong> or <strong>Region 1<\/strong> versions of <strong>a-ha<\/strong>&#8216;s &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.ca\/gp\/product\/B00004R78O\/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&#038;tag=musicbymailca-20&#038;linkCode=as2&#038;camp=15121&#038;creative=390961&#038;creativeASIN=B00004R78O\">Headlines and Deadlines<\/a><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/www.assoc-amazon.ca\/e\/ir?t=musicbymailca-20&#038;l=as2&#038;o=15&#038;a=B00004R78O\" width=\"1\" height=\"1\" border=\"0\" alt=\"\" style=\"border:none !important; margin:0px !important;\" \/>&#8220;, <strong>Johnny Hallyday<\/strong>&#8216;s &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.fr\/gp\/product\/B0007WRTGO\/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&#038;tag=musicbymailca-21&#038;linkCode=as2&#038;camp=1642&#038;creative=19458&#038;creativeASIN=B0007WRTGO\">Master Serie<\/a><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/www.assoc-amazon.fr\/e\/ir?t=musicbymailca-21&#038;l=as2&#038;o=8&#038;a=B0007WRTGO\" width=\"1\" height=\"1\" border=\"0\" alt=\"\" style=\"border:none !important; margin:0px !important;\" \/>&#8221; and <strong>Les Rita Mitsouko<\/strong>&#8216;s special edition of &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.fr\/gp\/product\/B00005OAUM\/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&#038;tag=musicbymailca-21&#038;linkCode=as2&#038;camp=1642&#038;creative=19458&#038;creativeASIN=B00005OAUM\">Bestov<\/a><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/www.assoc-amazon.fr\/e\/ir?t=musicbymailca-21&#038;l=as2&#038;o=8&#038;a=B00005OAUM\" width=\"1\" height=\"1\" border=\"0\" alt=\"\" style=\"border:none !important; margin:0px !important;\" \/>&#8221; ?<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m sure I am not alone in being frustrated by a lack of selection of foreign, non-Hollywood film and music <strong>DVDs<\/strong> and <strong>Blu-Ray discs<\/strong> in Canada.
