Rogers Video<\/strong> stores across Canada<\/strong> will no longer rent DVDs<\/strong> or Blu-ray<\/strong> discs tomorrow.<\/p>\n

Starting this week this chain will offload their film stock at reduced prices leaving Canadian<\/strong> consumers with very limited options in regards to renting films.<\/p>\n

Cable<\/strong> and satellite<\/strong> subscribers will continue being able to rent films on their digital boxes and Canadians<\/strong> with access to high speed<\/strong> connections have access to online film rental services like Cineplex<\/a>, Cinemanow<\/a>, iTunes<\/a>, Netflix<\/a> and Youtube<\/a>. But it appears the mail services and kiosks<\/strong> are now the only viable options for people who do not have access to cable<\/strong>, satellite<\/strong> and high speed internet<\/strong> services. <\/p>\n

Unfortunately the kiosk<\/strong> services offered by Zip<\/a> and Best Buy<\/a> are limited to major cities at the moment, though they will probably expand in response to the demand. And the cable<\/strong>, satellite<\/strong> and high speed internet<\/strong> options remain expensive.<\/p>\n

The current rental fee for recent high definition<\/strong> releases on my digital cable<\/strong> service is $7.99<\/strong>. And if I were to rent these films online in 720p<\/strong> I would use an average of about 4 gigabytes<\/strong> worth of usage per film towards my usage limit.<\/p>\n

I am hoping that the digital cable<\/strong> rental fee will be reduced in response to public demand. But at the moment I am also testing out The Movie Network<\/strong> and Moviepix<\/strong> as a cheaper alternative, though releases on The Movie Network<\/strong> still appear to be subjected to a considerable delay.<\/p>\n

As it stands I appear to prefer Moviepix<\/strong> for the channel’s selection of classic films and will likely subscribe to this service until Bell’s Fibe TV<\/strong> service is introduced to my neighbourhood.<\/p>\n

I will probably dabble in online film rentals<\/a>, within strict limitations, and use Zip.ca<\/strong>‘s services as my main source for newer releases. <\/p>\n

As previously reported on this blog, Zip<\/strong> will be expanding their kiosks. And I believe theater companies like Cineplex<\/strong>, Empire<\/strong> and AMC<\/strong> will eventually offer kiosk<\/strong> services in their locations in respond to the demand left by Roger Video<\/strong>‘s departure. <\/p>\n

I am also hoping for a national expansion of the Best Buy branded kiosks<\/a> to Best Buy<\/strong> and Mac’s<\/strong> locations through-out Canada<\/strong>. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
