{"id":5024,"date":"2018-06-02T12:00:12","date_gmt":"2018-06-02T16:00:12","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.musicbymailcanada.com\/blog\/?p=5024"},"modified":"2018-06-02T18:38:16","modified_gmt":"2018-06-02T22:38:16","slug":"new-taxes-on-streaming","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.musicbymailcanada.com\/blog\/?p=5024","title":{"rendered":"New Taxes On Streaming?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>On New Years Day 2019, residents of Quebec will begin paying a tax on streaming services. And unfortunately the Canadian Radio &#038; Telecommunication Commission is considering a &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/crtc.gc.ca\/eng\/publications\/s15\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">levy<\/a>&#8221; to fund Canadian programming and a House of Commons committee is asking for sales taxes to be collected on these services.<\/p>\n<p>This would of course raise the price of these services for the consumer, significantly. And these had been opposed by Canadians according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/openmedia.org\/en\/press\/poll-vast-majority-canadians-oppose-internet-tax-prefer-funding-cancon-extending-gsthst\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Open Media poll<\/a> conducted in early 2017 by the Innovative Research Group.<\/p>\n<p>According to this poll, 70% of the respondents opposed a new tax on internet and mobile phone bills, 51% strongly. And in regards to the implementation of sales taxes on foreign streaming services, 47% of the respondents supported it provided the funds would be used on Canadian content.<\/p>\n<p>CRTC chairman Ian Scott claimed the &#8220;levy&#8221; itself &#8220;would cost less than 50 cents on an average broadband bill of $47&#8221; durring a May 31st, 2018 <a href=\"http:\/\/business.financialpost.com\/telecom\/crtc-wants-internet-providers-netflix-to-contribute-to-canadian-content\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Financial Times<\/a> interview so they could easily just divert some of the sales taxes to Canadian Content instead. But there has yet to be a response in regards to these &#8220;contributions&#8221; from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ourcommons.ca\/Parliamentarians\/en\/members\/Melanie-Joly(88384)\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Canadian Heritage Minister M\u00e9lanie Joly<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ourcommons.ca\/Parliamentarians\/en\/members\/Justin-Trudeau(58733)\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Prime Minister Justin Trudeau<\/a>, who had both claimed there would be no internet taxes.<\/p>\n<p>Please contact your local <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ourcommons.ca\/Parliamentarians\/en\/members\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Member of Parliament<\/a> on this issue.
