{"id":5586,"date":"2020-02-08T15:54:12","date_gmt":"2020-02-08T20:54:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.musicbymailcanada.com\/blog\/?p=5586"},"modified":"2020-02-08T15:54:12","modified_gmt":"2020-02-08T20:54:12","slug":"fire-threatens-vinyl-supply","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.musicbymailcanada.com\/blog\/?p=5586","title":{"rendered":"Fire Threatens Vinyl Supply"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>A major American lacquer disc provider was lost to fire on January 7th, 2020, threatening the world&#8217;s supply of vinyl records.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Apollo Masters (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.apollomasters.com\" target=\"_blank\">Apollo Masters<\/a> was one of two facilities that produced <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"acetate discs (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/obsoletemedia.org\/acetate\/\" target=\"_blank\">acetate discs<\/a> in the world, the other being in Japan. But experts from the record pressing industry have told <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Billboard (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.billboard.com\/articles\/business\/8550477\/vinyl-record-industry-apollo-masters-plant-fire\" target=\"_blank\">Billboard<\/a> that the real effects of this loss won&#8217;t be known for some time, although a &#8220;major hindrance&#8221; is predicted due to the Japanese producer&#8217;s current backlog.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Vinyl record sales had recently surged worldwide so some members of the industry are worried that this may cause the sales to drop, as the labels struggle to manufacture and release their recordings. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the United States alone, sales of LPs and EPs had grown by 7.9% to US$419.2 million in 2018 according to the <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Recording Industry Association of America (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.riaa.com\/u-s-sales-database\/\" target=\"_blank\">Recording Industry Association of America<\/a>. And here in Canada, we saw a 3.1% increase in sales in 2019, to 973,891 vinyl albums sold according to <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Nielsen (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nielsen.com\/ca\/en\/solutions\/measurement\/music-sales-measurement\/\" target=\"_blank\">Nielsen<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There should probably be no delays for most <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Record Store Day (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/recordstoredaycanada.ca\" target=\"_blank\">Record Store Day<\/a> releases this April 18th.
