-- "Member Get A Member"/"Get A Friend" offers
The two clubs have offers in which members can obtain additional selections free (s&h not included) by introducing their friends to these clubs. Offers vary from club to club, but most are for three free cds, an exemption being placed on Ontario residents because of Section 37(2) of the (Ontario) Consumer Protection Act, which was created to protect consumers from pyramid schemes.
To counter the loss of potential membership created by this law, these clubs have introduced programs specific to the province of Ontario, enabling members to collect one or two free cds via the new member they've signed into the club, these offers requiring members to collect the free selection(s) from the new member.
-- Payment tips
* Many of Canada's major banks accept payments for Columbia House and CDHQ, mostly via ATM, telephone banking and/or web services. The service fees for these banks vary but one can still save on the postage and/or long distance calling costs associated with payment by mail or by telephone.
The banks confirmed to accept payment for Columbia House are : The Bank Of Montreal (via telephone banking and web services only), The Bank Of Nova Scotia (Scotiabank), The Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce (CIBC), Canada Trust The Royal Bank and The Toronto Dominion Bank.
The banks confirmed to accept payment for CDHQ are : The Bank Of Montreal (via telephone banking and web services only), The Bank of Nova Scotia (Scotiabank), The Canadian Imperial Bank Of Commerce (CIBC), Royal Bank and Toronto Dominion Bank.
Access to this payment method may require the enabling of telephone banking on one's account. Please contact your local branch for additional information.
* When paying by credit card, you should tell the customer service representative that you wish or do not wish to have all of your future purchases charged to your credit card. Automated shipments sent by default because of a late or lost reply card may be billed to your credit card resulting in interest on unsolicited purchases. Replacements for defective selections may also be charged to your credit card if you have pre-authorised credit card payments. Returns are automatically processed to one's CD club membership account but may not automatically be processed to one's credit card. This may require a member to contact the club after the return had been received by the club. Further processing delays are also to be expected in these situations.
* Always obtain a total when paying by credit card by phone. Most customer service representatives will automatically give you a total but it is always better to ask, in case of errors or credits on your membership account.
-- Additional tips
* If possible, members of CDHQ club should wait to take advantage of offers in which they obtain free selections with the purchase of their mandatory regularly priced selection.
* CDHQ was rumoured to stop offering Air Miles on January 1st, 2000. but their site still advertises their offer, one air mile for every $10 purchase, and their sister company, Columbia House, has joined this program. I believe they have decided to keep their association with Air Miles.
* A backdoor to Columbia House Canada's catalog can be found via their french site, Maison Columbia. Click on "Membres", then use the search window on your left to find the selections you're looking for ("Artiste" means artist, "No. Sel" means selection number, "Titre" means title and "Chanson" means song.) This backdoor may disappear once passwords are introduced into their french membership.
