Consumer Information

Site Updates Today

Just thought that i’d mention that i’ve added a few more sources to my listings today, including some foreign sources for DVDs/Blu-rays, Vinyl, Memorabilia, Sheet Music/Books and Music Instruments. And in regards to the latter you should note that both GuitarCenter.com and Woodwind and Brasswind now list their catalogs in Canadian funds and offer discounted shipping for Canadians.

FM Radio on Smartphone ?

Did you know that most Android powered smartphones are equipped with a FM chip, which would enable people to listen to their local stations for free, without data charges ?

That’s right. Instead of streaming your favourite local FM stations and paying for minutes or data you could be listening to them off the air, even when your cell service is down. But chances are your local cell provider has decided to turn it off because they think there isn’t a demand for it.

I’ve signed the change.org petition on this issue because people should be able to access the local FM stations during emergencies and do so using less of their battery power. And I recommend you do so as well and consult freeradioonmyphone.ca for additional information.

BTW, some Samsung Galaxy Tab users are able to use the NextRadio app to enable their FM chip, provided they did not purchase it via a cell provider. Click here for details.

Fort McMurray – Where to Donate ?

Like most Canadians I have been shocked by the events in Fort McMurray, Alberta and thought i’d post an entry on this blog dedicated to how one can help the nearly 100,000 displaced residents of this area.

The Canadian Red Cross is currently on site and are of course accepting donations via a special web page and via text. To donate via the web site click here and to donate $5 text REDCROSS to 30333.

Monetary donations are also accepted via the Salvation Army by clicking here. Alberta residents wishing to volunteer through this organization can do so by clicking here.

Most of the evacuated residents are expected to go to Edmonton so that city’s local food bank is requesting local food donations and volunteers. Click here to donate food and to volunteer. Click here to make a donation.

The Edmonton Emergency Relief Society is also looking for volunteers, monetary donations and various non food items. A list of the later can be found by clicking here, where instructions to volunteer can also be found. To donate funds to this charity click here.

Alberta residents that can take in the evacuated can look for details on a special Facebook group dedicated to this aid by clicking here.

The situation is only getting worse as communities that welcomed the evacuees just south of the town are now being evacuated themselves because of a shift in the winds. And it appears that several thousand people could be stranded north of Fort McMurray if the bridges spanning the Athabasca River are lost.

Any help will likely be appreciated.

May The 4th – Star Wars Day !

It’s Star Wars Day so I thought i’d give you guys a heads up on the specials that are out there :

Amazon.ca will of course offer quite a few discounts today on Star Wars blu-rays, DVDs, CDs and toys, as will chapters.indigo.ca and Lego.

iTunes is offering up to 50% discounts on Star Wars themed apps and games. And perhaps you can find deals in the States at Alibisicon, Amazon.com, Barnes & Noble, BetterWorldBooks.com, EntertainmentEarth.com and Second Spinicon because our dollar is slowly climbing at 79 cents. But don’t forget deals can also be had in Great Britain.

Although our dollar is basically only worth half a British Pound at the moment and their blu-rays and DVDs are not compatible with most North American equipment, you’ll find that some deals can be had at Amazon U.K on t-shirts, posters, memorabilia, etc. And their shipping is generally cheaper and quicker than that of the United States.
